I have posted this post at Awardspace forums too, so, if it is an inconvenience, I apologize in advance.
Hello,
I have tried for the first time to build a website and I wish to do a not-so-bad job at it.Smile At this point in time, I am very confused and need some serious help. I have been exposed to Frontpage and Dreamweaver but that was to just do some very basic code debugging (basic because I am not adept at HTML or PHP); I have never built a website, a complete website.
After a week of research, learning about several webhosts and domain name registrars, and the consequences that accompany free webhosts, I decided on Awardspace as the best fit for my needs. I want a build a decent personal website, which is not going to sell anything, but it certainly going to further me in professional terms. I am a recent MBA graduate and I wish to build a professional-looking website.
My website will be a professional one (considering that I am seeking jobs), but I do intend to have a section where I would like to provide some information about my interests, knowledge sharing, etc. I wish to have a provision where I can share my Microsoft Onenotes with friends and colleagues. I wish to build a professional website, but not bland. So, I have been going crazy looking at a myriad of options to do this; I have looked at free WYSIWYG website builders, that are standalone, online WYSIWYG site builders like Wix, Weebly, Synthasite and a few more, but none seems to work, so far. What I mean is that I tried them, built websites with them, and then tried to upload the pages built into those WYSIWYG site builders to Awardspace, but I am faced with errors I have no clue about.
I decided to look into Dreamweaver and Frontpage, but that would be like going back in time for me, especially when I have become familiar with builders like Weebly, Wix and Synthasite. I am willing to learn, no doubt about it, but I also need more time devotion to other tasks, and not just the website building. I tried Soholaunch to build a basic framework of my website (veeralsolanki.com), but it just doesn't cut it in terms of visual appeal and features.
I am still not giving up; now I have ventured into CMS's like Joomla, Drupal and Mambo (just 3 days ago, I had no idea what a CMS was Smile ). Looking at websites created with Joomla, I am very impressed by it, especially when it is free. It seems pretty sophisticated, but it's sophistication itself has made me ask questions about its use for a newbie like me. Is the learning curve steep, is it too time consuming, is it even worth my time and energy and, is it actually an option for me, as I don't need a website to process customer orders?
Having tried everything I have in the past week, I am inclining more towards joomla, as it is free and I have seen how impressive a tool it is for building websites. I could use it in the future to design websites for other people too. But, stopping my train of thoughts here, I would truly appreciate if I can receive some much needed guidance and advice on all this. It's pretty easy to tell I am lost.Smile
So, what tools do most people on Awardspace use with the greatest stability? Is joomla a viable option for a person like me, considering I can't enroll in a cl[censored]to learn it, but can do the learning in bits and pieces and also considering I am eager to put together my website as soon as possible on my paid Awardspace host. If I choose joomla, how do I uninstall Soholaunch safely? I read somewhere on the forum that installed applications can't be uninstalled, they have to be removed manually. If I remove the files manually or delete them, will the entries in the database (?) for Soholaunch (as I had to create one DB before installing Soholaunch) remain intact or they will be flushed? I am a little familiar with Linux.
Thanks for reading my LONG post. I hope to receive help and guidance to solve the problems I have been facing so far.
Thanks,
